What Is Delhi’s “Water Bell” System?

The Delhi government has introduced a unique “water bell” system in all schools to protect students during the heatwave. A bell rings every 45 to 60 minutes when it sounds, all students stop what they are doing and drink water. The system is designed to prevent dehydration and heatstroke during school hours. Additionally, schools have been directed to:

  • Ensure clean drinking water is available at all times for every student.
  • Appoint a nodal teacher specifically to monitor heatwave safety implementation.
  • Administer ORS (Oral Rehydration Salt) solution to students before they leave school if required.
  • Submit a compliance report to the Directorate of Education by May 2, 2026.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta issued a direct statement pointing out that Delhi has seen temperatures exceeding 40°C for nearly 40 consecutive days over the past 2–3 years and that strict implementation of the Heat Wave Action Plan 2026 is non-negotiable.
