Ayushman Bharat Yojana 2026 Latest Update: In a historic move towards universal healthcare, the Central Government has extended the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) to cover all senior citizens aged 70 years and older across the country. Eligible elders can now receive free cashless treatment of up to ₹5 Lakh per year in any empanelled hospital, irrespective of their income or socio-economic background.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has introduced a dedicated Ayushman Vay Vandana Card specifically for the 70+ age demographic. This major expansion is actively benefiting around 6 crore senior citizens belonging to 4.5 crore households nationwide, mitigating the severe financial burden of old-age medical treatments.
Key Benefits Under the 70+ Ayushman Card Category
The implementation guidelines set by the National Health Authority (NHA) divide the financial wallet allocation based on the household’s current status:
- For Existing PM-JAY Families: Senior citizens belonging to families already covered under the scheme will receive an additional top-up cover of up to ₹5 Lakh per year exclusively for themselves. This dedicated wallet does not need to be shared with other family members below 70 years.
- For New Families (Not Covered Under PM-JAY): Elders will receive a shared family cover of up to ₹5 Lakh per year. However, this wallet is restricted strictly to the senior citizens within that specific household.
- Option for Other Public Health Schemes: Senior citizens currently availing of other public health insurance systems like CGHS, ECHS, or Ayushman CAPF have a flexible one-time option to either stick with their existing scheme or switch to the AB PM-JAY portal.
- Private Insurance Compatibility: Individuals holding private health insurance policies or Employee State Insurance (ESIS) are fully eligible to apply and generate their Vay Vandana card.
